Beslekha Fortress: a forest ruin near Sukhum with careful route choices

Beslekha Fortress is a mossy forest ruin near Sukhum. There is little visitor infrastructure, so come in daylight with an offline map, closed shoes and a willingness to turn back if the path is wet or overgrown.

In the forest near Sukhum, stone almost dissolves into the green: moss, fern, damp air and wall fragments that do not immediately separate from the slope. This is a place to read with your eyes, without touching masonry or pushing beyond the visible path.

Defence Near a Crossing

The logic of this kind of ruin is easier to understand near water and older routes: crossings, approaches and control of movement mattered. Beslekha pairs well with Беслетский мост: каменная арка над лесной рекой у Сухума and Беслетская ГЭС: лесная инженерная память без захода в опасные зоны, but it does not need to become a long forest search.

Today: a Short Forest Route

Treat the site as a quiet stop, not a full trek without preparation. After rain, stones and soil may be slippery; in warm months, greenery can close in on the path; and navigation may not lead to the easiest approach. Do not climb walls, move stones or enter places where the route is no longer clear.

When to Stop

If the track is washed out, vegetation blocks the way, the group is tired or daylight is fading, it is better to limit the visit to exterior observation and return towards the bridge or HPP. With children, keep the route short and explain that these ruins are not for climbing.

Details

Practical: Beslekha requires more self-sufficiency than its distance from the city suggests.
