Gup Waterfall: Stone Pools in a Tkvarcheli Canyon
Gup is a chain of cascades and stone pools in a narrow canyon: cold water, damp rock, ferns and an approach that should be judged by weather and water level.
The narrow Gup river canyon has green water in stone bowls, damp moss and the sound of cascades stepping through the rock. Water temperature, clarity and access change with season and rain, so treat the site as a careful nature stop rather than a guaranteed swimming place.
Why it is worth the trip
Gup is interesting for the shape of the canyon: water has carved rounded bowls in the rock, and the walls are covered with moss and ferns. The atmosphere is enclosed and damp, but safety depends on water level, slippery stone and whether the exit route is clear.
Getting there
The approach is linked to Tkvarcheli district roads and a short section near the riverbed. After rain, dirt, stones and banks can become more difficult quickly. Leave time for slow access, the walk near the water and a possible turnaround rather than trying to reach the pools at any cost.
Swimming and stopping
Do not assume the bowls are safe by default: first assess depth, current, entry, exit, water temperature and wet ledges. If the water is high, cloudy or the group is unsure, it is enough to view the canyon from stable ground and stay out of the water.
Details
Practical: Comfort at Gup depends on weather, water level and the approach.
- Shoes with real grip are essential; wet stone and moss can be slippery even on a dry day.
- Do not jump into pools or enter the water if you cannot see the bottom, exit or current strength.
- After rain, keep a backup plan: the road and riverbed may become unsuitable for part of the group.
- Carry out rubbish, do not leave food near the water and do not widen the path through ferns.
- For families or mixed-confidence groups, a short bank-side visit is often more practical than swimming.
