Ascending to Anacopia: fortress, stone and measured pace
The climb to Анакопийская крепость: старые стены над Новым Афоном is an active New Athos block with road, steps, sun, old stone and an exposed summit. Make it conditional on weather and energy: water, footwear grip, early turnback and descent margin matter more than reaching the panorama at any cost.
The ascent quickly changes the scale of town: the seaside walk drops below, and pines, limestone, wind and fortress walls take over. The route is rewarding, but heat, rain, visibility and the descent often decide what it becomes for the group.
The Way Up
The usual approach mixes paved sections, road, steps and rougher stone near Анакопийская крепость: старые стены над Новым Афоном. Conditions vary with heat, rain and visitor flow, so do not turn the climb into a fixed-time transfer. Water, free hands and shoes with grip are more useful than extra weight and a rigid plan.
At the Summit
The summit is about walls, tower views and the relationship between the mountain and the coast. Stay on stable ground, keep back from drops and do not climb historic masonry for a photo. Old stone may look solid without being suitable for weight, impact or attempts to “test” the structure.
Fitting It Into the Day
Use the climb as a main active block of the day, especially in warm weather. It pairs better with a quiet town walk or monastery visit than with several other climbs. Start down before fatigue, thunder, fog, strong wind or fading light turns the descent into the hardest part of the route.
Details
Practical: Build a return margin into the ascent.
- Check current access and visiting arrangements before starting.
- Carry water; shade is uneven along the route.
- After rain, treat stone steps and compacted earth as slippery.
- Keep children close on exposed sections and near old walls.
- Skip the summit push if thunder, strong wind or poor visibility moves in.

Part of tour
- OpenNew Athos in one day: cave, monastery and Psyrtskha walkA New Athos day works best as a flexible sequence: New Athos Cave: cool halls and a timed underground visit, New Athos Monastery: domes, terraces and an active religious site, the Psyrtskha water route and, only if timing and weather allow, Anacopia Fortress: old walls above New Athos. The goal is a balanced town day, not a race through every headline stop.

- OpenAnacopia Fortress: old walls above New AthosRelatedAnacopia Fortress on Iverskaya Mountain means a climb, old walls, exposed wind and views over New Athos. It works best as an unhurried route with water, footwear, distance from edges and respect for masonry, not as a quick sprint to the panorama.
- OpenNew Athos Monastery: domes, terraces and an active religious siteRelatedNew Athos Monastery is an active religious site above town, with domes, terraces, hillside walking and sea views. Plan it as a respectful visit with rule checks and margin for heat and walking, not as an open viewpoint or a quick in-between stop.
