Sukhum Lighthouse: a walk to the tower without assuming a climb
Sukhum Lighthouse is an engineering landmark at the city’s edge, not a guaranteed climb. Plan a short exterior stop, bay views and an easy turn-back if access is closed, stairs are wet or the wind picks up.
The lighthouse stands on Sukhum’s windy edge: metal, salt, fishing details and open water close by. The point of the walk is not getting inside at any cost, but sensing the city thinning out, the shore becoming more working and the bay opening wide.
What to Look At
Study the tower from outside: its shape, rivets, base, relation to the shore and view over the water. For most visits, that is enough; internal stairs and platforms should not be treated as a default part of the route.
Access and Care
If the door is locked, barriers are up, warnings are posted, repair traces are visible or the metal is wet, do not look for a way around. Wind by the water makes height feel stronger, stairs can be narrow and slippery, and structural condition is not always clear from below.
Continuing the Route
After the exterior stop, descend to Пляж Маяк: открытый галечный берег у края Сухума or return to the Набережная Сухума: прогулочный каркас с погодой и запасом сил walking line. In grey, windy or evening conditions, keep the route short and decide your turn-back point before continuing.
Details
Practical: treat the lighthouse as an exterior landmark, not a guaranteed climb.
- Do not cross barriers or enter closed sections.
- In rain, wind, poor visibility or on wet stairs, keep to the outside.
- If access is officially open, keep hands free and wear stable closed shoes.
- With children, choose safe distance and a short nearby beach walk.

It works for a self-sufficient pause in calm sea, but requires attention to large pebbles, depth, wind, exit from the water and limited facilities.
- OpenPitsunda Lighthouse: cape edge and evening horizonRelatedPitsunda Lighthouse is a clear point on the cape: a white vertical, wind, sea and coastline views. Plan it as a short exterior walk after the beach or grove, without assuming tower access; wind, wet stones, technical areas and late light all need margin.
- OpenSukhum Seafront: a walking spine with weather and energy marginsRelatedSukhum Seafront is the city’s main walking spine, but it works best in sections: account for heat, wet paving, evening return, open water-edge areas and variable services. It is a flexible line, not a route that must be completed.
